HW 2/13

“Waking Up and Taking Charge,” by Anya Kamenetz is about college students needing to stand up for themselves by forming Political Action Committees and making a difference by getting the cost of schooling down. Kamenetz shows how college students are being taken advantage of because most don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. She takes note that most young adults today don’t know the dangers of debt when it comes to school or even opening a credit card or signing a loan. Kamenetz is trying to shine a light on this issue by convincing students to rally together and demand a change. I believe that Kamenetz’s essay was convincing enough to make me want to make a change. However, she does not talk about the negative consequences it could have by having s campaign. She definitely got her point across and tugged at everyone by relating to them, but her plan is not all that though out and it may not turn out the way everyone would hope. Change definitely needs to be more student let, but, they cannot do it all on their own. They would need some outside sources or even those who work at the college to have their back when trying to make this change.

Kamenetz uses emotional appeal and reason for her rhetorical appeals in this essay. She uses emotional appeal by giving real life examples by showing how students struggle to understand the concept of debt and money. She makes reference that most young adults and teenagers do not understand the dangers of debt and how fast it can accumulate. Most people who acquire debt dont think about the end factors and think of it as a “later problem.” That’s where people mess up because when debt starts to build up people dont realize how deep you are in and it makes it a a lot harder to get out. Kamenetz also uses reason by saying “If we don’t march for us, who will?” This really puts it into perspective that if we as students want something done FOR US, then we need to make it happen. We are the ones who need to initiate change and work for something that we want. We aren’t going to be handed things as we get older so we have to start putting in some work if we want to turn things around.

CL 2/13

A
1. Students need to rally together to get the cost of schooling down to evidently get student debt reduced
2. Her argument is pretty absolute because she knows that student debt is a problem because the prices to go to school is so great, and she knows that there needs to be a change in it and it has to come from students
3. She states that it might not assert the claim if something went wrong in a protest

B
1. A.) The cost to attend school is putting people in thousands of dollars in debt
B.) Without a unified voice, individual protests can only make a small ripple
2. A.) “Tuition discounting is possible only at a tiny percentage of well-endowed private schools serving a tiny percentage of students. At selective colleges in 2004, only 10 percent of students came from the bottom half of the income scale
B.) In February of 2005, fifteen students at Yale organized a sit-in until they were removed by police. One week after the sit-in, Yale announced that it would no longer expect any tuition contribution at all from the families earning less than $45,000 a year.
3. Yes the evidence is good and accurate. This evidence is relevant to the reasons because it shows how her reasons are being seen in her essay

C
1. Students are what makes the changes in schools. Schools do not see a problem with their costs because they aren’t paying for it, so students have to speak up and make the change
2. I do share these assumptions because I think that if you aren’t being effected by this then you aren’t aware of the problems so i think its in the hands of the students to make the change if they want it

D
1. Kamenetz’s only rebuttal seems to be that if students were to protest for what they want, something wrong could happen in their protest

HW 2/11

Kamenetz’s “Waking Up and Taking Charge,” was a really well written essay. She talks about the student debt and how students should rally together to make a change if they want it. She has a-lot of information about this topic, maybe because she went to a prestigious University so she understand the determination to get rid of student debt. In her essay she uses rhetorical appeals, she’s arguing to inquire and persuade and she meets the criteria for a reasonable reasoner. She uses emotional appeal by using real life examples to show you how students struggle understanding concepts that have to do with money. She says that teenagers and young adults today do not know the dangers of debt when doing things such as signing a loan or even opening a credit card. She also says “If we dont march for us, who will?” She argues to inquire by wanting everyone to take notice that there is a problem in the way young adults are informed about how they can inquire debt so easily. She sees that there is a problem and there needs to be a way to fix it.She also uses arguing to persuade because she is trying to get students to stand up for what they want and form a political action committee. She also meets the criteria for a reasonable reasoner because she is well informed on the issue she is presenting and she seems to be open minded by acknowledging that things could go wrong in a protest.

CL 2/11

8. Kamenetz’s rhetorical appeal in her essay can be seen as reason and emotional appeal. She uses real life examples to show you how students struggle understanding concepts that have to do with money. She says that teenagers and young adults today do not know the dangers of debt when doing things such as signing a loan or even opening a credit card. She also says “If we dont march for us, who will?”
9. Kamenetz’s aim of argument in this essay would be arguing to inquire. She wants everyone to take notice that there is a problem in the way young adults are informed about how they can inquire debt so easily. She sees that there is a problem and there needs to be a way to fix it.She also uses arguing to persuade because she is trying to get students to stand up for what they want and form a political action committee.
10. I would say that Kamenetz does meet the criteria of reasonable reasoning because she is well informed on the issue she is presenting and she seems to be open minded by acknowledging that things could go wrong in a protest

CL 2/6

  1. Emotional appeal was used in Archer’s “College Debt,” by talking about how everyone wants to have the “American Dream.” If we have kids now or in the future, most parents want whats best for their kid.
  2. Archer is using the mediating and inquiry forms of argument in his essay. He isn’t trying to convince you not to go to college, however, he is trying to show you the downfalls of attending a school and having so much money in debt. He asks some questions that get you thinking about why you are attending college and if you’re doing it for the right reasons.
  3. No he does not display all of these criteria to his argument. He has reliable evidence in his argument and makes sure he is supporting his opinions. He however is very one sided when arguing about whether or not college is really worth it. He seems to only rag on it and say that everyone does it and its not worth your time and money. Archer’s argument shows us that this wasn’t as big of an argument back in the 70’s and earlier because you did not need to go to college to get a good job, and college was not as nearly as much as it is today. He is aware that we will struggle with this in the future as costs get higher
  4. I wouldn’t trust Archer’s solution because he isn’t considering both sids of the argument. He seems to be one sided. He isn’t being critical of the other side. Most jobs nowadays require some sort of degree from college.

Waking Up and Taking Charge

  1. The shared topic between the two articles is the massive debt college students are in.
  2. In “College Debt,” Archer talk about how students go to college and end up in thousands of dollars in debt. In “Waking Up and Taking Charge,” Kamenetz talks about forming rally’s or sit ins or a campaign for students to get their points across that they need guidance, and lower school costs to ensure they dont end up in thousands of dollars in debt.
  3. I do find her a good spokesperson because she shows you what the problem is and gives you ways that you can potentially fix it. She isn’t trying to convince you that you shouldn’t go to college, but instead doing something to fix it while still attending. She also attended a big University, so she understand the process everyone is going through and give some insight and guidance from her experiences.
  4. Her proposal could be seen controversial because some people may thing that what she is doing wrong and that if you are a student and try to go to college you should be aware of how much it is going to cost and basically suck it up
  5. I would agree with her proposal because i think that if you want to attend college you should, and if you want change you should try to make it. And you should have the right to be informed on every aspect before making decisions
  6. Those who disagree with her could be ones that did not attend college or had to worry about money. They could argue that if you’re signing up for something you should know the parameters of it, if not it’s your own fault.
  7. Claim: Students are not being informed enough on excessive debt and how to help it
Reason: Kids just sign on a dotted like without knowing what they’re getting into
Evidence: Those in their twenties making $12,000 a year are being approved for a $10,000 line of credit and not being able to afford it.

CL 2/4

  1. The reason that the value of college has gone down is because in todays world getting just a 2 or 4 year degree isn’t good enough anymore. Some many people nowadays have a college degree, it’s not hard to hire a college grad. More than likely you have to continue to go on in school to further your degree to either get the job you want or to make more money. Often time a career is going to hire the person with the furthest degree. There are better alternatives like trade schools, going to a better college can help get you a better paying job, deciding which major to have.
  2. Emotion appeal in paragraph 8 talks about the American dream that so many of us want and strive for. We want whats best for our kids now and in the future.
Reason appeal in paragraph 5 because he’s giving examples of why he believes college isn’t necessary due to the debt

Archer is using the mediating and inquiry forms of argument in his essay. He isn’t trying to convince you not to go to college, however, he us trying to show you the downfalls of attending a school and having so much money in debt. He asks some questions that get you thinking about why you are attending college and if you’re doing it for the right reasons.

He is aware that we will struggle with this in the future as costs get higher.

HW 1/30

408-412
Although a lot of what the author is saying in “Waking Up and Taking Charge,” I don’t understand, I am able to grasp the concept that students aren’t helped much when it comes to paying for college. Students a lot of the times don’t understand what they are getting themselves into when they sign for a loan. We put ourselves in danger by having such a high debt. Anya Kamenetz makes valid points when she talks about how unaware 18-23 year olds are when it comes to debt, loans and bills. She talks about how Yale and in Canada students formed groups to campaign lower costs at schools

  1. Personally I have never felt like I was alienated from politics. However, I have witnessed times when older people have made younger people feel inferior about politics. Some older people feel that they have more intelligence or experience about politics than younger people and they do not want to hear it.
  2. Honestly I do not find a college student-young adult PAC appealing because its just not something that I am into. I am not into politics nor do I understand it quite like other people do. If I had the chance to take a role in such a group I probably wouldn’t unless I fully understood everything about it
  3. Having that type of outlook is good because you are always half full. You believe that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it, and most of the time when you think that, you do. I think this contributes to college students and parents because parents usually want to push their kids to do whatever is best for them and what will make them successful and happy. Along with that comes a great deal of money depending how far you want to go. If you wanted to be a doctor because thats your lifelong dream, you should chase it but be aware that it will put you thousands of dollars in debt. And other times if you come out of college not even using your degree, you could be making a significant amount less and struggle paying back your debt. Students should have meetings with all kinds of advisors and counselors before deciding to go forth with college. It can help them evaluate their situation and their dreams and decide whats best for them in the end.
